I am a huge Paullina Simons fan and I have been waiting for her next book with impatience and trepidation. I could not wait to read The Tiger Catcher and I was very happy when I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. I devoured this book! The Tiger Catcher has Paullina's beautiful and unique writing style, complex and interesting characters, and an impossible love story (as to be expected from her books). It also has time travel which I knew about and a reincarnation theme, which I didn't. I am fascinated by the reincarnation topic, I am always looking for more stories about it, so to find it in a book by my favorite author was such a great surprise and made me love The Tiger Catcher even more.Paullina Simons doesn't shy away from writing unlikable and problematic characters, characters who make bad decisions and stupid mistakes. But she makes her readers care and root for them regardless. Josephine and Julian's relationship is all consuming and destructive, they both hurt other people in order to be together and have to recon with the consequences of their selfish behavior. But their love is so great, it will take them on a journey across space and time. On this journey they will have to learn from their mistakes and avoid the same disastrous pattern that tore them apart in the fist place. Will they find each other and their HEA? I very much hope so! I cannot wait to read the next book in the series, A Beggar's Kingdom.*ARC provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review but because I loved it so much I also bought a copy of the book for my bookshelf
Wow. Unbelievable book. My wife introduced me to this author's work and THE BRONZE HORSEMAN--which Is one of my favorite contemporary novels. All I knew about this story was that it involved time travel--which is new for this author but is definitely my speed. I wasn't sure what to expect but what I got blew me away. I don't want to say too much about the story, but I'd put it in the category of great time travel love stories like TIME AND AGAIN and BID TIME RETURN (the Ricard Matheson novel that was the basis for the film SOMEWHERE IN TIME). Though, honestly, I thought THE TIGER CATCHER was better than both of those books--which are classics. There's a great love story here as well as a great adventure. And it also had a very interesting take on time travel that I had never seen before. The book has complex characters, sets the stage with an interesting contemporary story, and has mystical elements that I will be thinking about for some time. I know there two more books coming that will continue the story and, frankly, I can't wait.
MI really don’t know how to feel about this book. I wanted to love it. I truly and desperately wanted to love it. And I did. The first 200 pages were wonderful and I was so excited to continue Josephine and Julian’s story and to see what plot twists were going to play out but I wasn’t ready for this plot twist...I was going to make this review spoiler free, but I can’t review this book honestly without explaining the spoilers.THE REST OF THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS******Josephine dies. I thought maybe she fakes her death to get away from her potentially abuse other fiancé. No, Josephine dies. Like literally dies. Dead. Not coming back. See, I have a lot of trouble reading about deaths of characters. I’m VERY empathetic so when I read someone struggling through a death like Julian is struggling with Josephine’s, it really hurts me a lot. I cry and my heart feels like someone squeezed and damaged it. After Josephine died, I lost a lot of interest in the book not sure where this trilogy is going to go until....super unexpected time traveling happens (what??). Okay so now, I take it, and also from reading the back of the book synopsis, this book is going to be Julian going back to all these different time periods to find all of Josephines past lives. So at the end of this book we meet Mary aka Josephine...she really isn’t likable, but since Julian is in love with him and I feel connected to his feelings I guess I like her. Well I will say I liked Josephine better than Mary. Mary was only likable toward then end and then...Mary dies. Or at least I believe she dies. Julian is back in his own time and he has to try again. Why? Why do you have to try again? My heart is seriously going to break because when he goes through all of her past lives it’s going to be the end. The end of forever and I’m not ready for this type of heartbreak. Seriously, I can’t handle stuff that has a sad empty ending and I have a feeling this is where this trilogy is going to end. I already can’t take the fact that Julian is so distraught over Josephine’s very real not fake death.I feel like this book could have had so much potential if Josephine didn’t die. She could’ve had this mysterious past or I don’t know anything but her NOT dying. This book was definitely not want I expected and from reading the other reviews, I thought because this is Paullina’s new trilogy it was going to be epic like The Bronze Horseman....but I guess it’s just like Harper Lee said she didn’t want to write another book because nothing would be as great as to kill a mockingbird. I guess we need to see it like that. There’s not going to be another The Bronze Horseman. This trilogy is just a lot more heartbreaking because the only happy ending I could see is if Julian kills himself to be with Josephine’s spirit. Which...it’s almost hinted at the end. So, is this a cliffhanger? Will he kill himself? My guess is probably not. Because...we still have TWO more books. Two more books for a lot more heartbreak to happen and as much as I want to read the rest of this series and I know I have to just to see how it ends. I just know this book will completely and utter break my heart and I’m not ready for it. The ending will come and it will not be a happy one. Because...sometimes in life people don’t get happy endings. But this, I just can’t live with going through this journey and destroying myself. This book is difficult to review because it is good and it is amazing to read a story of man who travels across space and time to find all the past lives of the girl who loves...but as for me who NEEDS HEA and can actually be thrown into a depression over fictional characters losses and despair, I don’t think this book is for me. I don’t know how this series will end, but I think it’s safe to predict there is no HEA not since Josephine died. This will be a journey of coping, acceptance and learning to love again. Which, I find to still be extremely heartbreaking. So, four stars to The Tiger Catcher. I feel hallow after finishing this...
